Board of Directors
Dale Rose, PhD (Class of ’86)
Elected To The Board: September 2002
Dale currently serves Maybeck as the Board President, as the Chair of the Board Nominating Committee, and as a member of the Development Advisory Committee.
During his four years as a student at Maybeck High School, Dale was an active member of the Maybeck Touring Club and served one year as an elected member of the Rules Committee. After graduating Maybeck in 1986, Dale spent a year bicycling in Europe and North Africa and then attended UC Santa Cruz. From Santa Cruz Dale moved east for five long winters in Chicago, where he received his Doctoral degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from DePaul University. Dale and another graduate student (... his future wife) co-founded a human resources consulting firm in Chicago in 1994. Shortly thereafter, he moved his consulting firm, 3D Group, to Emeryville. Through his work Dale has helped dozens of nonprofit organizations and Fortune 500 companies to improve their leadership and organizational effectiveness. Dale has written many publications on leadership, and has published a book by the Harvard Education Press titled Hire Better Teachers Now. Dale enjoys learning the wonders of the world with his young daughter, painting which he first learned at Maybeck from Sue Matthews, tournament level backgammon and racquetball (where he won the doubles state championship in 2015), and occasionally bicycling in the east bay hills.
Austin Brewin (Class of ’83)
Elected To The Board: September 2002
Austin currently serves Maybeck as the Board Treasurer and Board Secretary, and as chair of the Finance Advisory Committee.
Austin graduated from Maybeck in 1983 with passions for learning, cooking, and bicycling. He went on to a career as a professional bicyclist as a messenger in San Francisco. Eventually he graduated from UC Berkeley where he focused on folklore while running the kitchen at Barrington Hall. After graduating, he wound up toiling in fellow Maybeck grad Kevin Parker's basement, where he stayed for eight years except for a brief hiatus for culinary school. Austin continued his education at UC Davis, graduating with an MBA in 2000. Austin currently finds gainful employment as the controller of Limbo, Inc., a startup in mobile phone entertainment. Somewhere in the middle of all that Austin found time to marry his college sweetheart. They now have two kids and reside in Berkeley.
Elected To The Board: May 2009
Sherry grew up in the Bay Area, attending schools in San Francisco and Oakland, and finally settling in Berkeley. She attended Cal State Hayward her first year of college, but quickly hated the commute and missed her friends, so she transferred to UC Berkeley to start her sophmore year, and graduated in December 1986 with a BA in Social Science. Sherry had been working in the CPA firm of our Board President's father, Thomas Rose, and she wanted to continue in the public accounting field, so she returned to Cal State Hayward and took a number of accounting, business law, and auditing classes. She continued in the public accounting field for approximately 10 years before switching to financial and administrative management with a couple of local non-profit organizations, which took up another eight years. After marriage and two darling children, Sherry decided to start her own consulting business, providing accounting services to a variety of Bay Area non-profits in great need of help, and this went on for 5 years before she landed at Maybeck in 2006. In her personal life, Sherry is a strong advocate for physical fitness, despite many injuries, and became a certified Jazzercise instructor in June 2007. She teaches a physical education dance aerobics class at Maybeck for one semester each year, and also enjoys gardening, singing, reading, and traveling.

Laurie Kahn has been a high school teacher and administrator for more than twenty years and is very pleased to have joined the Maybeck community as registrar. Born, raised, and educated in the deep South, she soon migrated to New England where she completed her masters' degree and went on to teach English and head a girls’ dormitory at Phillips Exeter Academy. Having lived and worked in Berkeley for many years now with her architect husband and three children, she likes to think she is almost a native. Before coming to Maybeck she worked at Bentley School and read applications for the admissions department at UC Berkeley.
Outside of school, Laurie is a devoted soccer mom and is sure she has driven to every soccer field in Northern California. She is a community volunteer with the Berkeley Friends of the Library and at Berkeley High School. She and her family enjoy traveling to Yosemite and other beautiful places in California as well as to Hawaii – and, on occasion, back to Alabama.
For fun, Laurie loves gardening, swing-dancing, hiking, reading, crossword puzzles, and playing Pictionary, and she is a dedicated novice at watercolor painting.
Elected To The Board: October 2010
Colleen currently serves the board as a Member at Large. She is the mother of a 2012 Maybeck graduate. Colleen was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota and grew up all over the US (Texas, New York, Minnesota and Iowa--her father worked for IBM), graduating from high school in Johnston, Iowa. She received her BA from Beloit College, Beloit, WI in 1981 in Economics & Management with a liberal dose of Fine Art and Art History. Having spent a semester and summer interning in NYC, she returned there and worked for 10 years in the production end of the publishing business. After getting married in 1990, Colleen worked with her husband at K-Medic, Inc. as the office manager while designing and publishing the company's surgical instrument catalogues.
After their 2001 move to Berkeley, she was the Events Coordinator, Parents Association co-chair and ran the weekly lunch program fundraiser at The Berkeley Montessori School (now The Berkeley School). Colleen was very involved with the re-location of the school from the old Hillside campus to the current lower University site. When money ran out in the budget, she designed, donated materials and helped construct the new kitchen space in the historic Santa Fe Depot building. Colleen is the current vice-president of the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association and has served on their board for six years, in addition to leading public walks and building new paths. She is married to Helmut Kapczynski, has two sons (Stefan, a Maybeck alum and current student at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, and Max, a senior at Washington University in St. Louis), two step-daughters, and four grandchildren. Colleen is dedicated to her weekly women's hiking group and enjoys traveling, museums, theater, gardening, and baking.

Elected To The Board: November 2014
Andy and his wife, Bridget Clarke, are the proud parents of Maybeck students Katherine (’16) and Maria (’18) Dhuey. Prior to his appointment to Maybeck’s Board, Andy served on the boards of Montessori Family School, Habitot Children’s Museum and Skytown Preschool.
Andy is surprisingly likable, for a lawyer. He plays well with others and is a polite and gracious houseguest, most of the time. In recent years, Andy has made significant improvements in his personal hygiene. While it is Andy’s nature to joke around and try to find fun wherever it can be found, he takes the fiduciary responsibility of board service very seriously. He is delighted to have the chance to put his legal and financial skills to work for Maybeck.
Andy has a passion for marathoning, despite increasingly unimpressive finishing times. He is grateful that few people seem to know what good marathon times are, and thus they consider just finishing one to be a Herculean task worthy of high praise.
