Visual and Performing Arts
Arts education is essential to the Maybeck experience. Whole-school activities, such as regular visits to Theater and Art museums, set the stage for deep engagement in the arts. Our course offerings offer both breath and depth in the arts, whether that be music, painting, film-making, or acting and performing. Our classes cover nuts-and-bolts skills through regular practice and showcasing, but also offer historical context for the medium. Our teachers center the individual student’s personal creative journey as they progress through our many offerings.
Required Courses
At Maybeck, students are required to take two semesters of electives in visual arts, performing arts, or music. Many students take more. Particularly advanced arts students have proposed their own independent study projects, including Advanced Music Theory and Modern Art Movements.

Fall Play
Each year, students in the Maybeck community audition to join the cast of the Fall Play under the direction of our English and theatre teacher, Gwen Hornig. The cast is guided through a collaborative creative process from script selection, to a play-based rehearsal process, to the final curtain. This year, Maybeck High School presents The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon by Don Zolidis! A “fast-paced, rollicking ride…A wild, free-form comedy with lots of audience participation and madcap fun!” The seven actors in our ensemble take on three or more roles in this fairytale whirlwind. Our performances are November 14 & 16, 2025 (more details to come!).
