Maybeck Learning Support Center
Maybeck High School has always been asanctuary for the intellectually curious—students who think deeply, question boldly, and want a community where they can be their authentic selves. Our small, relationship-centered environment works particularly well for students who flourish when they are known as whole people rather than reduced to a transcript or a single way of learning.
Over time, that environment has drawn a vibrant and varied group of learners: creative thinkers, students whose educational journeys have taken unexpected turns, gender-expansive youth, and neurodivergent students with “spiky” profiles—brilliant minds who may also navigate dyslexia, ADHD, or executive-function challenges. What unites them is not a need for a lower bar, but for a different ladder, one that allows their strengths, curiosity, and individuality to drive their learning.
At Maybeck, we have come to understand that when intellectual rigor is paired with deep relational support and flexible teaching practices, students who might struggle in larger or more standardized environments are often able to do their most ambitious and original work.
The Maybeck Student Support Team
The Maybeck Commitment: A New Standard of Support
We recognize that for a neurodivergent student to thrive, the environment must be as flexible as the curriculum is rigorous. We are committed to a model where support is not an "extra" but an integral part of the school day.
Inclusive Pedagogy: Our faculty is dedicated to Universal Design for Learning (UDL), ensuring that lessons are built from the ground up to be accessible. By providing multiple ways for students to engage with material and express their knowledge, we remove the "invisible barriers" to success.
Executive Function as a Core Skill: We believe "how to learn" is just as important as "what to learn." Every student at Maybeck is supported in developing the cognitive tools—prioritization, organization, and self-advocacy—required for life after high school.
A Sanctuary for the Authentic Self: At Maybeck, neurodiversity and identity are intertwined. We provide a "mask-off" environment where students are celebrated for their unique processing styles, allowing them to expend their energy on learning rather than trying to "fit in."
Coordination with Allied Partners: We are the ideal placement for the academically-talented, high-functioning student who is ready for deep intellectual engagement. We coordinate with therapists, neuropsychologists, school districts, tutors, and families to ensure a seamless “circle of care.” Our Learning Support Center and the Student Support Team work together to:
Validate students’ neuropsychological profiles with evidence-based intervention (OG/Structured Literacy).
Work with school districts to provide accommodation assessment.
Provide accommodation documentation to the College Board for standardized testing.
Partner with other learning specialists and allied professionals to collaborate on ideas and pedagogical strategies.
Work with families whose school districts cannot support their child’s unique profiles and whose child needs support for credit recovery through online schools and alternative programs.
While Maybeck’s Learning Support Center and Student Support Team provide robust support, families are often surprised by how students flourish in our classrooms with less additional targeted support than they previously required. At Maybeck, the supports are woven into the culture of the school and our small, relationship-centered, and inclusive classrooms.
