Theatre Teacher 20% + Stipend for After-School Production

Job Description:

Maybeck High School, a small, independent, college-preparatory high school in Berkeley, seeks a part-time Theatre teacher for the 2025–2026 academic year. The Theatre Teacher will teach two semester-long theatre/acting courses, and lead one After-School Fall Theatre Production program.

Each daytime class meets three times weekly from late August through May. Theatre classes in our recent programming include Acting I and II, and Improv. We support teachers in offering classes in their discipline that align with their passion and expertise. We welcome applicants who have experience teaching inclusive theatre courses that support students in their development of confidence and competence as performers. 

As the After-School Fall Theatre Production leader, you will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of directing and producing the Maybeck Fall Play, which includes:

  • Select an engaging play for the Fall Theatre Production. (Recent plays have included: She Kills Monsters; Marian, The True Tale of Robin Hood; Arsenic and Old Lace.

  • Develop an audition and rehearsal schedule that ensures adequate time for preparation. Lead auditions, casting actors for the various roles in the play, and assigning understudies as needed. 

  • Direct and guide the cast in their character development, blocking, and overall performance, fostering a creative and inclusive atmosphere.

  • Conduct regular rehearsals to ensure that actors are prepared, lines are memorized, and blocking is executed effectively. Provide constructive feedback and support to individual actors, helping them improve their performances and develop their skills. 

  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages teamwork, respect, and creativity among the cast and crew. 

  • Advertise the dates of the play, and coordinate online ticket sales.

  • Organize and oversee dress rehearsals and performances, ensuring smooth transitions and a high-quality production. 

  • Coordinate parent volunteers to support production.

  • Design and coordinate costumes, sets, and lighting in collaboration with students and parents.

Qualifications: Previous experience in directing/producing theatre. Experience working with high school-age students is strongly preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse students, staff, and parents. Ability to establish clear and healthy boundaries with teens. Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate changing circumstances and student needs. Familiarity with script analysis, character development, and blocking techniques. Knowledge of technical aspects of theatre, including lighting, sound, and set design, is a plus. Ability to create a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.

Position Details:

  • Annual salaries are commensurate with experience and degrees earned. 

  • This 20% position does not include benefits

  • The salary scale at 20% is $16,210-24,820

  • After School Production Stipend: $3,000

  • Master’s Degrees earn an additional $200, PhDs: $400
