The French 1–3 sequence has been designed to reflect the philosophy and goals outlined in both the National Standards for Language Learning and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Across these three levels, the courses aim to develop, reinforce, and refine students’ proficiency in the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Through an inductive and communicative approach, students build a strong foundation in the French language and Francophone cultures while developing confidence as speakers and global citizens. Instruction emphasizes meaningful communication and practical language use in real-life contexts rather than rote memorization.
French 1 introduces students to basic vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Students learn to exchange simple information, describe themselves and their surroundings, and participate in short, guided conversations.
French 2 builds on this foundation by expanding students’ ability to communicate more accurately and fluently in the present, past, and future tenses. Students begin to explore more complex sentence structures and engage in extended dialogues, readings, and written compositions.
French 3 refines students’ skills through authentic materials, short readings, and cultural exploration. Students learn to express opinions, narrate events, and engage in spontaneous conversation with increasing depth and precision.
Throughout all three levels, students are exposed to the diversity of the Francophone world—from France to Africa, the Caribbean, and Canada—gaining insight into its languages, traditions, and perspectives. The courses encourage cultural curiosity, empathy, and appreciation for global diversity.
