Maybeck Open House dates have been scheduled for September 28 and October 26. We will start taking sign-ups to attend in mid-August.
In early March we paused from our regular schedule to devote an entire school day to our theme for this year, Climate Change and Social Justice.
Our day began with a presentation by Maclovia Quintana, the Vice-President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at EarthJustice ("the legal backbone for the environmental movement"). The rest of the day consisted of workshops from Maybeck teachers on a variety of topics and disciplines: We looked at the impact of multinational corporations (particularly big agriculture) on climate change; analyzed Maybeck's own carbon footprint; we explored the "New Green Deal", investigated the Seasteading Institute; considered the factors that determine how communities are affected by extreme weather events; we studied Pope Francis' encyclical "On our Common Home"; and much more. It was a great day of exploration and growth.
Maybeck hosts the USA Gap Year Fair for San Francisco/Berkeley
Over 100 families gathered at Maybeck High School on Wednesday, February 27th to talk with exhibitors representing 48 different domestic and international programs offering opportunities for travel and study between high school and college. Families began the evening listening to speakers articulate the value of taking a year off between high school and college to grow, learn, and experience new environments. Gap year program alumni were also present, and spoke powerfully about the transformative effect the experience had on their lives, especially upon enrolling in college.

Maybeck has a strong commitment to extracurricular learning experiences. The teachers here work to extend educational opportunities beyond their immediate subject areas and beyond the confines of the classroom at various times throughout the school year. Special Programs allow this to happen in an even more dynamic way.
This year’s program dates are March 25 - April 5, 2019, though dates of travel programs may vary slightly. Open the PDF below for more details on each program. You can view the catalogue by clicking here.
