Why write? Who am I as a writer? What is the story I have to tell? How can I harness my authentic voice on the page? What do I have to say about the most pressing issues in the world in which I am living? What do other people have to say about these issues, and how do their perspectives inform, complicate, or challenge my understanding and sense of what is right? How do we evaluate the value and importance of reading and writing in the emergent landscape of generative AI? These are the questions that we explore over the course of the year as we engage in a close reading of myriad texts, dive into inquiry-based dialogues, and continue to develop our skillfulness in the articulation of our insights on the page in analytical writing, and our courage as autobiographical storytellers. We’ll read selections by James Baldwin, Octavia Butler, Alexander Chee, Sandra Cisneros, Jon Krakauer, Audre Lorde, David Sedaris, Amy Tan, and Robin Wall Kimmerer, embracing the potential for learning from the perspectives and experiences of diverse voices, and developing as writers as we approach each of these authors and their published works as teachers of the craft.
