One Issue has dominated John's professional life - how do we provide instruction that works -- how do we conduct education so that people effectively learn. That passion led him to:

  • Develop a high school physics curriculum that focused on integration skills
  • Interview Nobel Prize winning physicists so his college students could hear directly from leading scientists
  • Develop curricula and write texts in history, physics, and computer science
  • Teach high school, college and university classes in physics, computer science and education
  • Head the American Association of Physics Teachers
  • Create an alternate program for high school dropouts to enter the university
  • Complete multi-year curriculum development programs for HP, U.S. Treasury, Andersen Consulting, the State of California and Sun Microsystems
  • Complete doctoral coursework in Educational Psychology and a Research Doctorate in the Impact of Instruction of Cognition
  • Consult to the Federal Courts on the impact of education in government procurement contracts
  • Develop a program for international students in Information Technology
  • Teach seminars in education and computer science world-wide
  • Join the staff of Maybeck

    He, his wife Catherine, and daughter Cassy live in Berkeley in an 1893 Victorian. Friends, house construction, publishing, photography, hiking, music, movies and books are essential components of his life.
