Admission Process

The admission process includes four steps outlined below. Students may enter the school only at the beginning of a semester. Decisions about incoming 9th graders are sent to all applicants in mid-March. Students who apply at other times of the year are notified of their status on a rolling basis. Maybeck follows admissions and recruiting guidelines outlined in the Bay Area Admission Directors Principles of Good Practice.

1) Open House: Parents and students are invited to attend an informal event with the staff for a slide presentation, question and answer session, and school tour. Reservations are not required, but do come early to find parking. Dates and times of our Open Houses are listed below.

2) Visit to Classes: We request that all students visit classes before their interview. Students visit for a half-day, starting at 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. They are welcome and encouraged to join current Maybeck students for lunch as well. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays usually work best for visitors due to our partial block schedule, but almost any weekday can work. Please call to schedule a visit in advance.

3) Placement Test: Before the interview date, each student takes an hour-and-a-half test that includes 50 math problems, a section on reading comprehension, and a writing sample. The following may be submitted in advance or delivered at the time of the test:

  • Completed Student Application Form (be sure to sign and date the back)
  • Family Financial Information Form (indicate if you are requesting financial aid)
  • $75.00 application fee (check or money order; we do not accept cash)

4) Interview: This is scheduled upon receipt of the application. Each student will be interviewed informally by two staff members for about 20 minutes. Parents do not attend the interview. We would like to review the following information before the interview:

  • Math Teacher Recommendation Form
  • English Teacher Recommendation Form
  • Principal/Counselor Recommendation Form
  • Grade reports and/or transcripts (photocopies are fine)
    • Students entering 9th grade should provide records from 7th and 8th grades.
    • Those applying to 10th, 11th, or 12th grades must provide complete records of all prior high school work.
